And because they just wanted to, at least in my opinion, although they were unlikely to say that. The Sixties had been so incredible. The once scruffy, outcast, and marginal Rolling Stones were now mainstream heroes to an entire generation. It was not The Stones’ image or inclination to say publicly that they dug what was happening, dug all these new kids being as outrageous as (or more than) they had ever been. Such reverse adulation was left for the more direct Pete Townshend to sing (in Tommy): “Looking at you, I get the power. Following you, I get the beat.”  But it was, at least the way I read it, definitely being done as a salute to the audience from The Rolling Stones, a thank you for all the records purchased, all the concert tickets bought, a celebration of the community that music had created.
