BUKKA WHITE 1969

Inside the Forum, the energy is intense. As the Stones walk in all eyes follow them. They disappear up the long concrete corridor, backĀ  to the dressing rooms. Inside it is reasonably calm. Gram Parsons and Stanley Booth are there, as is Glyn Johns. Hovering near the Stones is a black man I don’t recognize but who Stanley tells me is Bukka White, BB King’s 2nd cousin. He watches closely as Keith picks his National Guitar, an uncommn guitar for a white boy to have. And watching Keith play, he listens and then turns to Stanley and says, “Hey these boys are good. Have you ever made any records?” And everyone laughs. But, as show time approaches, everyone is asked to leave until the Stones, emerging later, are surrounded by Allen Klein (what’s he doing there) and Pete Bennett, they walk down the grey corridors toward the stage.
