The first time I heard The Beatles it was I Want to Hold Your Hand. It had come wafting across a university lawn somewhere on campus. It sounded great but it was a little disconcerting. There was no precedent. Rock ‘n’ rollers were solo performers, not groups. I went to the supermarket and bought the album. Meet The Beatles. On the cover four heads stared out from a black background, their heads floating in space.
