“Culture can be an insistent worm. The Berlin Wall, some argue, came down not because of Ronald Reagan but because of the influence of Western culture, which was broadcast into Eastern Europe and looked like a lot more fun. The Rolling Stones in Leningrad? There’s something in that.” From AMERICAN STORY

Along with many other American myths, I agree. It would behoove all of us to recognize what others did. Americans think we won the Second World War. The Russians lost 22 million people. Ignorance, Rodney Crowell writes, is the enemy.

it’s an American myth that Reagan brought down the Berlin Wall. If any politcal analyst would have suggested in Spring of 1989 that the Wall would be gone within a year, he or she would have been laughed out of town. The Wall came down because of the bravery of the East German people, the courage of the Hungarian Government to make a hole in the Iron Curtain. Lastly, Gorbatschow deserves credit for refusing to support the East German Government. Thereby, ironically fulfilling Reagan’s demand, ‘Mr. Gorbatschow, tear down this Wall.
