Inside the studio, the set is some television designer’s idea of “far out.” Tall crescent shapes rise from the stage floor to approximate an underground cavern. The stage behind is lit with orange gels.
Bleachers are set up in part of the studio for a small audience, but they are empty except for what appear to be a few of the younger employees of CBS who have found out that
Around the stage are large television cameras set on wheels, huge cables protruding. In shadow standing behind the cameras are the operators, union guys, wearing headsets. Hanging from the ceiling everywhere are television monitors.
Mick and the Stones are standing center stage. The floor manager holds his clipboard at the ready, and Ed Sullivan is brought out. He is heavily made up and looks as if he’s just gotten off the plane from New York. Ronnie tells me they made him fly to California because of the debacle years earlier when Sullivan insisted the Stones change the lyrics of their song from “Let’s Spend the Night Together” to “Let’s Spend Some Time Together.”
He walks up to Mick and shakes hands. The floor manager approaches and says, “Mr.. Sullivan, we’ll just tape the introductions now and do the band later if that’s all right.”
