I am never sure how the audience was chosen. They are mostly kids. I’ve been told that somehow or other tickets were given away free. I’m not certain the audience even knew, when they arrived, what they were going to see. So, it must have come as something of a surprise to them when Eric Clapton, Mitch Mitchell, Keith Richards, and John Lennon assemble on stage and break into “Yer Blues.”

Mick Jagger is a phenomenal stage performer, along with the rest of the band presenting as riveting a rock and roll show as you or I would ever see. He dances, teases, and provokes. He seems constantly to move, so that though he is directly in front of you, you can still never quite catch him, never be quite certain of what has just passed. His performance evokes some of the fascination of watching an illusionist. But when John Lennon breaks into “Yer Blues” he stands rooted behind the microphone as if planted there, only slightly bobbing at the knees, and singing thin-lipped. He delivers a performance of such simplicity and conviction that it is breathtaking, and I feel chills race up my spine. When John sings, “I even hate my rock ‘n’ roll,” the presence of the pain that made him write the line is clear in his voice.
