There was this guy named Ron whom I met through a fellow who worked at Warner Brothers Records. Ron was a Beatlemaniac. When I met Ron in 1974, it had been four years since The Beatles had broken up. Ron lived in New Jersey with his brother and his parents. Both Ron and his brother were fanatical collectors: Ron of Beatle memorabilia, and his brother of Trini Lopez posters. Every square inch of Ron’s bedroom was covered with items from his Beatle collection: the ceiling (Beatle posters), the bed (Beatle bedspread, Beatle pillows), and the walls (record jackets and photographs). In one corner there hung an eight-by-ten black and white publicity photo of The Beatles accepting a Mersey Beat award for their song “Love Mc Do.” Below the publicity photo Ron had the award itself, slightly dusty. He also had the most movie footage of The Beatles that I had ever seen, and I had sat around in the offices at Apple and seen a lot of their library. Ron had film of the Sullivan shows, The Beatles in Japan, The Beatles at Shea Stadium, and The Beatles first U.S. concert in Washington D.C., filmed the same week as The Ed Sullivan Show.
