At night people gathered at the Fillmore Auditorium. I went there with my brother to hear Jefferson Airplane. But I was straight. Even with that the swirling light show was impressive. The Fillmore hosted Big Brother and the Holding Company (with Janis Joplin), the Quicksilver Messenger Service, or the Grateful Dead. The bands stood on stage playing long, long songs, loud. On the walls all around them giant projections of various colored dyes, mixed together, swirled, merging into each other, like finger paints, like ever-reforming mandalas The music moved and the images moved and people on the dance floor moved, throwing their arms above their heads and swaying, all together. It was all very, well, liquid, like my tree. Almost everybody was high on one thing or another. Those who weren’t high soon would be.
