FAILED US IRANIAN HOSTAGE RESCUE

Post image for FAILED US IRANIAN HOSTAGE RESCUE
In the world outside, Ronald Reagan had settled into his Presidency. After Nixon’s resignation, Gerald Ford assumed office. It was interesting to me – now an ex-resident of Britain – to understand that in a Parliamentary democracy such as the UK or Canada – that would have been Ford’s natural role. The Prime Minister is […]

JONI MITCHELL “FREE MAN IN PARIS” 1974

Post image for JONI MITCHELL “FREE MAN IN PARIS” 1974
Music video was about music titularly, but it wasn’t music (Nor was it video, really. Most of them were film.) The most telling fact was that almost all videos were lip-synched, so while the visuals improved to extraordinary levels, there were no actual musical performances in the videos themselves, which is to say: music being […]

TRAFFIC “DEAR MR. FANTASY” 1972

by Ethan Russell

All of this was conceived by Ron Coro for Dave Mason’s new record. Split Coconut. We all awaited Dave Mason (once of Traffic; he had performed on “Dear Mr. Fantasy”). Yet another Englishman living in L.A., Mason soon walked through the door, breaking into peals of laughter when presented with his mask. He placed it […]

THE EAGLES “DESPERADO” 1973

The music business had moved west, as some said civilization had, to settle in Los Angeles. I returned to L.A. quite simply because I had run short of money. From Los Angeles came the “new music,” the singer-songwriters, all American. They had been young men and women when The Beatles first appeared. Now, with The […]

THE SECOND GULF WAR. “SHOCK AND AWE” 2003

by Ethan Russell

Post image for THE SECOND GULF WAR. “SHOCK AND AWE” 2003
As America readied its military to invade Iraq, I, along with literally millions of others worldwide, protested the invasion. I was particularly struck at the time by the ineffectual nature of our protests. They did not draw the kind of violent police response as did the protests of the Sixties as if governments no longer […]

BUSH GORE DEBATE 2000

by Ethan Russell

But in the campaign against Bush, Gore was frequently stiff and pedantic, apparently uncertain of how to present himself. It was interestingly reminiscent of the Kennedy-Nixon debates where, famously, the people that heard the debates on radio thought Nixon won, while those who watched Kennedy’s apparent ease and charm appeared convinced of his capacity to […]
