As America readied its military to invade Iraq, I, along with literally millions of others worldwide, protested the invasion. I was particularly struck at the time by the ineffectual nature of our protests. They did not draw the kind of violent police response as did the protests of the Sixties as if governments no longer felt the need to be responsive to their citizenry. The protests just seemed to matter not at all. One wonders if it is in part because we no longer have Armed Forces drawn broadly from our population? This is a bittersweet pill, because I was overjoyed when the draft was stopped. But as a result there is no “Hell, no. We won’t go.” Those days were over.
The invasion of Iraq moves inexorably forward despite protests. I was working in an apartment in Hollywood when Saddam’s deadline passed and CNN broadcast images from Bagdhad, the anti-aircraft tracers arcing green in the night sky.FROM AN AMERICAN STORY
