In 2001 and 2002, as America readied its military to invade Iraq, I protested the invasion, along with literally millions of others worldwide. I was particularly struck at the time by the ineffectual nature of our protests. They did not draw the kind of violent police response as the protests of the Sixties had, and it was as if on some level there was no longer a need to be responsive to the citizenry.
