We are all, by now, familiar with the images that would accrue during the Sixties: tear gas, dogs and beatings in the American South, King’s March on Montgomery, angry whites cursing blacks in Chicago, Watts burning, students protestors incinerating draft cards, self-immolating monks, hippies in psychedelic clothing, a nodding-out addict, the stabbing at Altamont.
