At the close of the festival, we saw a subdued Jimi Hendrix, intensely concentrating, perform a solo rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner on electric guitar, single notes arcing into feedback, howling, crackling with the noise of all that amplified electricity. The old anthem newly played for the half a million gathered and for all the filmgoers thereafter. Jimi Hendrix, a black, psychedelic star for the Woodstock Nation, will die from a drug overdose the following year, 1970. (FROM AN AMERICAN STORY)
