When it was announced that The Beatles were breaking up, it caused a great sadness to a great many people. As only music can (especially our age of music), The Beatles’ songs had marked the times through which we had passed. The Beatles had written and performed so many songs that there was always one that would remind you of something, help you out, or give you hope. Upon hearing of the breakup of The Beatles, the BBC disc jockey played “We Can Work It Out.” That’s what he wanted to accept. George was singing “Here Comes the Sun” on their last record, but All Things Must Pass became the title of his first solo album.

Now everyone had to get used to the idea that there were to be no more Beatles. As individuals they say over and over again that there are no more Beatles. (“I don’t believe in Beatles,” sings John, “I just believe in me.”) And over and over again, people will refuse to accept it. In 1984, four years after John Lennon is shot and killed, the rest of them (George, Paul, Ringo, and now Yoko) gather in London to discuss the dissolution of Apple. An English reporter asks, “Are The Beatles going to get together again?” (FROM AN AMERICAN STORY)
