SEX PISTOLS “NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS” 1977

Rock and roll splintered. Mainstream metal took on the flavor of professional wrestling, a theater of excess. Years earlier punk reacted years earlier with the Sex Pistols wonderfully-titled “Never Mind the Bollocks.” But they, too, became a splinter. Rap and Hip Hop emerged. The Wall Street Journal wrote a cover story about how rock’s audience had fragmented into different demographics. MC Hammer’s floppy pants danced across television, while Britney Spears dressed in a skimpy dress like a cheerleader moaned “Baby One More Time” and Michael Jackson danced with black men pretending to be in Africa carrying spears. His performance is riveting and the images are big and fragmented beyond sense. Everyone is choreographed and extraordinary. Media everywhere is splintering: the three networks are challenged by cable. The image onslaught accelerates even further.
