INSTAMATICS 1966

by Ethan Russell

“Spring came and the trees blossomed. By summer they were full and green, and it came time to think about getting a job. In Westport, Connecticut, I walked into Klein’s department store on Main Street because Klein’s had the largest book department in the area. I asked Stanley Klein, the son of the owner, if there were any openings in the book department.
Mr. Klein: “No.”
“Do you think there’ll be any openings coming up?” I asked.
Mr. Klein: “No. Do you know anything about photography?”
“I know how to take pictures and develop them.”
Mr. Klein: “We’re opening a camera department. Go talk to Gene.”
Gene was married to Katie. They had no children because, as Gene said, “There’s only room for one baby.” In Klein’s camera department I sold a lot of little 35mm Agfa cameras to people who came in wanting to buy Instamatics, explaining to them that the Agfa had a glass lens (the Instamatic’s was plastic) and a pressure plate to hold the film flat (the Instamatic’s cartridge didn’t). Gene taught me to do that.” (From ETHAN RUSSELL:AN AMERICAN STORY )
