As the Eighties wore on, as Madonna adroitly used wardrobe for personal reinvention instead of, as I believed my own musical heroes had, using personal reinvention for personal reinvention (even if they fell on their face); as money became once again the measure of merit and as social concerns seemed to disappear from discourse… the changes were… unpleasant.
