Every so often the turmoil of politics and the excess of America’s racism would flare. In 1991 the footage of Rodney King beatings blanketed the LA airwaves, and I felt I was once again as if I was witnessing the American South in 1962 or the riots in Watt). But despite the horror of the beatings were and the huge riots, there was a difference. They didn’t seem to drive a political response.
