In 2011 a Senate debate on water boarding revolved around a hypothetical dilemma offered to the witness: somewhere in a U.S city a terrorist has a nuclear weapon and the only way to get the information to stop it is through the use of torture. Although a measured response to the leading question would go to the efficacy of torture to obtain accurate information, the emotional point is made. The magnitude of the problem is overwhelming, almost numbing, just as Faulkner noted, and the moral dilemma the same. FROM AN AMERICAN STORY
