It was a somewhat surreal undertaking, as we raced through Tom’s locations in Southern California, wiring stuffed buzzards on weathered tree trunks at Big Bear Lake, tossing stuffed alligators into fire-ravaged canyons in Ojai, until finally, speeding on some little white pill Tom had, we arrived at a turkey farm out in the middle of some God-forsaken spot and unloaded our star pinball machine. We placed it in front of these thousands of turkeys and then leapt on the back of the pickup, my hand clutching the shutter release, as Tom and I shouted “Higher! Higher!” in imitation of Sly Stone singing before the five hundred thousand at Woodstock, and all the turkeys answered us, “Gobble-gobble-gobble,” their heads erect, paying strict attention. FROM AN AMERICAN STORY.
