For years a backup singer text (for Delaney & Bonnie, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton and Leon Russell), Rita was making her first record produced by the distinguished David Anderle at A&M Records, one of the few to whom Los Angeles really was home (he was born there) and who thereby didn’t always appear to be lost at sea.
Rita’s folks were southern and Christian. Her sister, also a singer, married Booker T of “Green Onions” fame, who would later give the world Willie Nelson singing “Stardust.” They had a ranch in Malibu.
We went to the ranch to shoot. Rita wore a black cape and rode horses and walked around as I took pictures. As it seems to almost every year, Malibu had just had a brush fire. As Rita walked through the blackened branches, she looked like an Indian princess.
