At one time or another, I also photographed the rest of the Apple roster. Mary Hopkin, the young discovery from Wales, was as sweet as she was reputed to be, though with a certain wariness. Probably no entertainer had been as repeatedly warned of the wicked, wicked ways of show biz as Mary was by her parents. Her song “Those Were the Days (My Friend),” produced by Paul McCartney, had sent her to the top of the British charts and made her famous across the Atlantic as well. She was one of Apple’s first successes when most felt that everything Apple touched would turn to gold. Around the time I was photographing Mary I was listening — over and over — to the strains of “Blue,” by a new Canadian-American singer, Joni Mitchell. More powerful music from across the water. FROM AN AMERICAN STORY.
