Valerie had blond hair that hung to her shoulders and was cut in a flat bang across the front. She looked like Marianne Faithful, or Françoise Hardy, the look of the time. I found her beautiful and, of course, assumed she would have nothing to do with me, so it came as a great surprise when we ended up in bed together, almost immediately.

Now when the crew-cut fraternity boys would hang their heads out the window, yelling, “Is it a boy or a girl?” I felt I had the girl on my arm, and they could yell all they wanted. So for a months we went out together, taking for granted all the good times. There were mornings lying in bed, the famous violet-rimmed tree out the window, when it seemed like heaven. I was falling in love. It was the best of times.FROM AN AMERICAN STORY
