To quote Joan Baez’s wonderful line from Diamonds and Rust about her time with Bob Dylan in the early 60s (“Speaking strictly for me / We both could have died then and there”), speaking strictly for myself, it was as if all of music (as “music” then meant to us, the explosion of talent, and hope, and belief that somehow all of this was going to transform and make better the entire world) climaxed at that moment, rising as high as it was going to go. The Beatles, seeming to live the most magical of lives, were giving it all back to us. They were holding out this promise and hope if we would just pursue it. Remember, there’s nothing that you can do that can’t be done. It’s easy. (FROM AN AMERICAN STORY)
