When the dominance of the LP ended – and with it the ”writerly” concept album, it was the sunset of an era. I didn’t remark it at the time. I just missed what those LP fueled inspirations had been able to tell me. I definitely noticed they were gone.
The effects of television went way beyond music, arguably eviscerating serious political debate, but that is where I felt them first. The traditional singer songwriter is left barking at the TV (by way of example, Don Henley ravaging the anchorman in Dirty Laundry ”Is the head dead yet?”) or uses it along with everyone else to sell themselves.
